About

Hello! My name is Dr. Joseph D. Censor. As a psychologist and as a generally curious, introspective, and reflective person, I continually strive to gain a deeper understanding of the human psyche and the human experience. I enjoy connecting with people and helping them enhance their mental health and wellbeing, and I have acquired extensive skill and experience in treating a wide range of psychological issues. In my private practice, I provide a variety of psychological services, including consultation, psychological assessment, psychotherapy, prevention services, clinical supervision, and education and awareness about psychological issues.
Over the years that I have been practicing, I have helped people with many different psychological issues and mental health disorders, including difficulties with emotion regulation; marital, familial, communal, and spiritual conflict; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); mood disorders; anxiety disorders; eating disorders; and borderline personality disorder. Additionally, I specialize in treating unresolved grief and psychological trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance use disorders, and behavioral addictions.
I have experience with many types of psychotherapy. However, my treatment approach can be best described as grounded in cognitive-behavioral theory and conceptualization, and delivered flexibly within the context of a strong therapeutic relationship. Interpersonally, people describe me as calm, warm, empathic, validating, and genuine. I strive to develop trust with my patients and work collaboratively with them on identifying and attaining SMART treatment goals. I am committed to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism, and I am guided by the principles of evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP), integrating the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences (https://www.apa.org/practice/resources/evidence).

I work primarily with older adolescents and adults and have substantial experience working with military veterans and active-duty service members. Prior to starting my private practice, I provided psychological assessment, individual psychotherapy, and group psychotherapy in various mental health care settings and levels of care, including a university psychology clinic, an outpatient trauma clinic, an outpatient substance use treatment clinic, a private group practice providing comprehensive dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), a residential OCD and anxiety treatment center, a residential addiction treatment program, and a large federal health care center.
Now, a little bit about my personal life. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for graduate school, and my family liked Milwaukee and the Midwest vibe so much that we decided to stay in Milwaukee after I completed my clinical training. My wife and I have been married for more than 20 years, and we have five beautiful children. I am an Orthodox Jew, and I am very much engaged with my local congregation and community. Some of my hobbies include reading, gardening, interior designing, and (much to my daughters’ chagrin) I’m always up for a good dad joke.
