About

Hello! My name is Dr. Joseph D. Censor. As a psychologist with a background in philosophy and neuroscience, I have a strong interest in gaining a deep understanding of human behavior, the human mind, and the human experience. Moreover, I enjoy connecting with people and helping them enhance their mental health and wellbeing. In my private practice, I provide a variety of psychological services, including consultation, assessment, diagnostic clarification, individual psychotherapy, couple therapy, group therapy, prevention and psychological wellness services, clinical supervision, and education and awareness about psychological issues.
Over the years that I have been practicing, I have helped many people improve their mental health and wellbeing. I work with a wide range of psychological issues and disorders, and I specialize in treating unresolved grief, psychological trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), substance use disorders, and behavioral addictions.
I have experience with a variety of psychological theories and treatment approaches and interventions. However, my personal orientation and approach is primarily grounded in cognitive-behavioral theory and conceptualization, as well as drawing on psychoanalytic principles and processes. Interpersonally, people describe me as calm, warm, empathic, and genuine. I strive to develop trust with my clients and work collaboratively with them on identifying and attaining SMART treatment goals. I am committed to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism, and I am guided by the principles of evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP), integrating the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences (https://www.apa.org/practice/resources/evidence).

I work primarily with older adolescents and adults and have substantial experience working with military veterans and active-duty service members. Prior to starting my independent practice, I provided psychological assessment and psychotherapy in various mental health care settings and levels of care, including a university psychology clinic, outpatient trauma recovery clinic, outpatient substance use treatment clinic, private group practice providing comprehensive dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), residential OCD and anxiety treatment center, residential addiction treatment program, and a large federal health care center.
